00120 Cidade do Vaticano

ENGLISH TEXTS:

Letter to the Conference of Bishops (and the diocesan Bishop)

To address the Bishops of the Episcopal Conference: Dear Bishops of the [nationality] Conference,
To address your diocesan Bishop: Your Excellency [name of bishop],

All of us are aware of the difficult period Christ's Church is enduring at the moment with multiples scandalous news around the globe, more recently in the United States.
Our Holy Father has pointed to clericalism as the root of these sexual scandals perpetuated by the hierarchy. In my personal opinion, that's the secondary cause. I think the problem is homosexuality and homosexual orientation.
The majority of the victims are postpubescent boys and male adults. The Church has been advising for decades that men with homosexual inclination or orientation should be barred from the seminary. It is you job as Bishops to scrutinize and discern the candidates.
I'm writing you this letter just to ask you to do your service with passion and zeal. This includes reporting any misdeed, whether of sexual nature or not, to the right authorities in the Church and, perhaps, in some cases, to civil authorities. Don't be afraid of maintaining the status quo.
We, the faithful, admire truth and honesty much more than false unity. I encourage all of you to be obedient to the Church's directions and to be courageous on fighting evil and corruption in and out of the Church.
A sense of revolt is growing among the faithful and there are thought measures, like boycotting parish donations, for example, if you demonstrate any lack of integrity to resolve and implement the correct procedures and discernment to guarantee that these crimes will be much more prevented. If we, by any chance, encounter sufficient knowledge or evidence of covering up these atrocities, we'll take the necessary action to push you onto the path of righteousness.
Be faithful, dear Bishops. I hope this letter reaches any single one of you so that we can feel inspired to do what is right.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Letter to the Apostolic Nuncio

Most Reverend [name of Nuncio],
I am grieved and angered by recent revelations of ongoing abuse within the Catholic Church in the United States and around the world. Priests and bishops have perpetrated unconscionable acts of abuse against both children and adults, and have worked together to conceal that abuse and protect abusers.
As the apostolic nuncio of our Holy Father Pope Francis to Canada, you have a unique ability to convey the needs of American Catholics to the Holy Father and to work for the conversion and reform of the Church here and everywhere. I ask you to obtain the support of the Holy Father for the following initiatives:
1. Publicly admit the grave sins of commission and omission by members of the clergy and perform public acts of penance. Listening to the stories of victim-survivors and understanding the impact of abuse must be central to this effort.
2. Lay bare to secular lay-led forensic examination all records of abuse allegations and how they were handled in every diocese in the nation.
3. Remove from public ministry every member of the clergy who committed abuse or worked to conceal it, and submit these men to canonical justice and to secular justice wherever applicable. Every bishop who knew of abuse and protected abusers rather than the children of God must resign and submit himself to a life of prayer and penance.
4. Reform seminaries and other places of formation to protect both children and legal adults from predation. Particular attention must be paid to intra-hierarchical abuses of legal adults, which are not addressed by the provisions of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.
5. Create structures to more fully involve the lay faithful in the workings of each diocese, especially with regard to intra-hierarchical cases of sexual abuse and misconduct. The review boards established pursuant to the Charter might serve as models for welcoming and handling reports of misconduct and abuse within the hierarchy.
6. Work to extend statutes of limitation to provide for temporal justice wherever possible, and in every instance cease opposition to such extensions.
Catholics are shaken by these revelations. Radical changes are necessary in order to restore the confidence of the lay faithful in our shepherds’ willingness faithfully to exercise their episcopal authority. I ask you to use your influence to work for these reforms and the renewal of the Church.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Letter to Pope Francis

Address:
His Holiness Pope Francis
Apostolic Palace
00120 Vatican City

Your Holiness,
Our hearts are broken, our faith tested, by the escalating crisis engulfing our beloved Church. We are angry, betrayed and disillusioned. The pain and suffering of the victims never ends, as each news cycle brings more horrific revelations of sexual abuse, sexual misconduct, cover-ups, and deceit—even at the Church’s highest levels.
Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò’s recent statement impels us to reach out to you directly for answers. His testimony accuses you, Holy Father, and highly placed cardinals of turning a blind eye to former Cardinal McCarrick’s egregious behavior, and promoting this predator as a global spokesman and spiritual leader. Is this true?
Several crucial questions raised by Archbishop Viganò’s statement, however, require neither lengthy investigations nor physical evidence. They require only your direct response, Holy Father. When reporters questioned you recently about Archbishop Viganò’s charges, you replied, “I will not say a single word on this.” You told reporters to “read the statement carefully and make your own judgment.”
To your hurting flock, Pope Francis, your words are inadequate. We need leadership, truth, and transparency. We, your flock, deserve your answers now.
Specifically, we humbly implore you to answer the following questions, as the answers are surely known to you. Archbishop Viganò says that in June 2013 he conveyed to you this message (in essence) about then-Cardinal McCarrick:
“He corrupted generations of seminarians and priests and Pope Benedict ordered him to withdraw to a life of prayer and penance.”
Is this true? What did Archbishop Viganò convey to you in June 2013 about then-Cardinal McCarrick?
When did you learn of any allegations of sexual abuse or sexual misconduct with adults by then-Cardinal McCarrick?
When did you learn of Pope Benedict’s restrictions on then-Cardinal McCarrick? And did you release then-Cardinal McCarrick from any of Pope Benedict’s restrictions?
Holy Father, in your letter to the People of God on the scandals, you wrote: “An awareness of sin helps us to acknowledge the errors, the crimes and the wounds caused in the past and allows us, in the present, to be more open and committed along a journey of renewed conversion.” That’s why we expect you, our Holy Father, to be honest with us.
Please do not turn from us. You’ve committed yourself to changing clerical ways in the Church. That a cardinal would prey on seminarians is abhorrent. We need to know we can trust you to be honest with us about what happened. The victims who have suffered so greatly need to know they can trust you. Families, who will be the source of the Church’s renewal, need to know we can trust you, and thus trust the Church.
We have a right to know. We have a right to your answers.
Holy Father, I want to affirm the love I have for you as the Successor of St. Peter, for Catholics in every time and place possess a unique filial love and reverence towards the person of the Holy Father.  With all my heart I desire that he who fills the Petrine Office be defended from anything that would harm his person or the effectiveness of his ministry.  But the accusations of someone with the authority of Archbishop Viganò does just this.  His allegations create an air of mistrust and suspicion against your person and the perception of your ability to continue to minister effectively in the Petrine Office.
Holy Father, these accusations multiply the same distrust in the secular world, thereby threatening your Christian witness and moral authority in the eyes of the world. I ask for an immediate, full and exhaustive investigation be made into these allegations so that the moral witness of your person, and that of the senior hierarchy of the Church, may be exonerated of all suspicion of incompetence, neglect, and evildoing.
With love for Christ and the Church,
